As we indulge ourselves in vast quantities of Turkey and “Fixings”, and the leftovers to come. I wanted to say something about my favorite Holiday. It was the day I asked my Wife to marry me. It is one of the few that I am allowed to sink into a sofa, rest my eyes during the 3rd quarter of a football game, and not clean the kitchen. But is my favorite for other reasons. Unlike the Fourth of July it is not a Patriotic Holiday, and unlike Easter, Christmas, Hanukah, or Passover it is not a religious Holiday. It is an American Holiday (good try Canada), formed right here in the states, not brought from some other country like Cinco de Mayo, or St. Patrick’s day.
I am Steeped in ‘Ol American Ancestry, all the way from 1973, when my Father immigrated here from England, and my Mother a year later (Yes, I am apparently an Anchor Baby). Growing up People asked me if we celebrated Thanksgiving, this was odd to me as if they were “More” American than I, or if my family held some sort of grudge over that War of Independence thing. Of course we celebrated, it meant a day off of work or school, we even had Turkey on Thanksgiving (Although the occasional Leg of Lamb made it to the table).
It Meant even more to me after I sponsored my Father’s Citizenship a few years back (I gave him an American Flag that was one of the few things that survived Katrina), and this year my Mother has applied for her citizenship. No word back yet though (I told her to cut all ties with the “Daughters of the Empire” Organization). It would appear that this time next year we may be able to celebrate as Americans and not just some people eating a large bird.
It dosen’t matter if you can trace your ancestors to the Mayflower (or the Americans who were here before then) or you took your “Oath of Allegiance” as a citizen last year, or you just arrived last week after waiting to come to America to start your new life. This holiday belongs to all of us, it helps bind us together and it is something to truly give Thanks for.
Happy Thanksgiving, it is a holiday for us all to enjoy.
